Renovation of Methodist Manse

Sat in the prime position on Upper Poppleton’s Green is the Methodist Church manse which is currently having refurbishments and renovations undertaken by well-known local York builder Leeper and Deighton, into a wonderful characterful yet contemporary home. The clients, who are looking to downsize from their current residence in the local area, purchased the property with big ideas in mind – we were able to put those ideas into motion, with work already being conducted on site. With the property having a wealth of history as well as being in a conservation area, we were keen to retain as many period features as possible to the existing dwelling, whilst incorporating the client wishes for a modern extension to the rear.

The renovation internally will be of modish inspiration with features such as underfloor heating, glulam beams and aluminium shadow skirting being prominent throughout. The external look of the property had to be considered more carefully in order to blend with the surrounding buildings and link to the previous history of the plot – items such as timber sash windows and re-clamped bricks were successfully given approval by the local council to achieve this.

The rear extension is however a striking contrast to the older style of the property. Sustainable cedar cladding has been used externally and compliments the aged style of existing brickwork, as well as the extension having a bespoke glazed link separating the old from the new. The glazed link and the addition of large tailored sliding doors that look onto the farmland behind will flood the new living areas with natural light, creating a spacious and welcoming environment. We have had the privilege of working closely alongside Reveal Doors and Windows to accomplish this key feature for our client.

Our clients are excited for works to be completed in order to call this underused Methodist building, into a well loved and utilised dwelling for years to come.
